It’s been a while…I know, and I’m (sort of) sorry. I haven’t found a good reason to write about the Vikings in a long time. But now that we’re about to enter the offseason, I thought I’d do a Super Bowl + offseason thoughts post.
I’m super disappointed that the Super Bowl is featuring the Boston and New York markets…puke. I’ll be semi interested just because I hate the Patriots, so I’ll be pulling for the Giants. I think Eli is proving some haters wrong in how tough he’s been, and how much he’s been winning when it matters. There aren’t a lot of QBs out there doing this right now…so it is nice to see.
My prediction: Patriots 33, Giants 20. Since I want the Giants to win a close game, that means it’ll be a blow out by New England. Oh well…moving on to the 2012 season.
News this week came out that the Vikings were taking calls on the 3rd pick in this year’s draft. ALERT…ALERT…ALERT……..this is NOT news. I can call the Vikings about the 3rd pick and offer a DVD, limited edition, The Toxic Adventure DVD…and it would mean nothing. They won’t be trading that pick until draft day. Sure, they’ll probably have some deals in place depending on how the 1st two picks go and what other trade may happen (Rams trading the 2nd pick possibly…?).
I’d like to see the Vikings take Kalil or move down, grab a few additional picks, and grab one of the top 3 offensive tackles. Is Kalil that much better than other top tackles in the draft? I don’t know the answer to that...but the Vikings will have to make that decision. What scares me the most: The Rams make a huge deal with someone for the 2nd pick and RGIII goes 2nd, at which case…the Vikings get Kalil but don’t make a trade. I don’t see anyone making a Julio Jones style trade for Blackmon this year…but I could be wrong. This further proves the point that it is NOT news that the Vikings are shopping the 3rd pick.
Some of the free agent interests I’d like the Vikings to take a peek at, are guys like Mario Manningham, Dwayne Bowe and Colston (doubt he’ll get away from the Saints). I don’t think Vincent Jackson will come here, nor do I think any free agent WR will be worth the money he’ll get. We need a guy who can go up and get the ball, but also get down the field and run GOOD routes. We don’t need a Wes Welker or anyone like that, we have Percy to run the slant routes. We also need more level headed guys than the DeSean Jackson types. I’d say that a guy like Stevie Johnson is interesting…but I don’t think he’s a number one receiver, and we lack that…big time.
There are too many players I’d like to see the Vikings dump (Shiancoe being one)…but we have a lot of positions to target in the draft, so whatever free agent needs we can’t fill, we will have to make up for it in the draft. It’s a complicated process for the Vikings front office, but have a GM who apparently is making the final decisions…should help. It’s also beneficial that were picking 3rd in each round, rather than in the teens or twenties.
There isn’t much more to dive in to right now…but we’ll try and keep up when there’s interesting topics to talk about. Unless there’s some major stadium news or massive rumors about who the Vikings do/don’t sign…it’ll be fairly quiet on the Vikings front at WhatWouldBudDo.com. Keep up with us on Twitter in the meantime…we’re always staying active on there - @Purple_Domino and @WhatWouldBudDo

...although Rodgers looked as comfortable against the Giants defense as he does in those discount double check commercials. So, in honor of that...I made these! Which one is better?

Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay Pakers - New York Giants - NFL - NFL Divisional Playoffs - Minnesota Vikings

The wild wild west? Well that's what we've come to expect with each off season of Viking football. With the very painful injury to All Day, the Christian Ponder experience getting it's first taste of life in the NFL (and concussion #1), and the way our favorite team finished the 2011 season, there is some hope for the future, but where will it be? Will it be in Minnesota? Who will the Defensive Coordinator be? Can you change coaches like underwear and expect a different result? Thus, we have the wild wild west.
Let's start with the stadium issue. WTF?! Let's get something straight right now. Our elected officials do not care for the “public good”. They are only interested in re-election. So, what ever benefits their political futures, is the way they vote and the way they govern. How often do you have an elected official of yours only run for one term? They never do because they get caught up in the same thing that athletes do. Money and fame are an addiction. Simple as that. These “brain wizards” at the capitol are not interested in the public good. They never are. If they were, they wouldn't be arguing over public good issues such as feeding, clothing and housing the homeless, work training programs, public transit, street and highway repairs, bridge repairs, J-O-B-S and how best to get them into the local economy. And by the way, WTF is Shakopee doing tossing their name in the hat at the last minute!? This whole thing is awesome. I will make one prediction right now. The Vikes will eventually get fed up with the delays, bickering and in-action and leave Minnesota. The state (brain wizards), will look around with a stunned look and say things like, “we never saw this coming”, “we were being held hostage” and the obligatory “we would never allow for the expansion of gambling as a funding source”. HA! I hope you all enjoyed the last season of Viking football in Minnesota. I know it's a long shot they will move (see Jacksonville and San Diego), but I have zero faith in the politicians of Minnesota and their backward thinking. Of course, we'd sue the team to keep the team name and colors in Minnesota, then wait for the NFL to expand (might as well play the lottery as you'd have better odds), then we'd finally get a stadium built at a MUCH HIGHER COST and we'd all have to get sued to watching the Packers. Sounds grand doesn't it?
Onto All Day. What a turn around. See what happens when you make someone the highest paid at their position? He gets the big payday and we're happy for him because he deserves it. But then we saw in DC how quickly it can all be taken away. I have total faith that he'll return both large and in charge. And he'll be angry again to prove everyone wrong. Hopefully, he'll have a offensive line that will allow him to bust loose again.
The Christian Ponder Experience saw it's first extended action and had some moments that may inspire people to think that we finally have a long term answer at QB. We did see some things that raised questions. Like our offensive line. At times we looked really good and both really bad in the same drives. I know that Leslie Frazier has his work cut out for him. Hopefully our new GM Spielman can see eye to eye with Frazier and are both on the same page. Like who's in charge of the defense?
So many questions to answer, so much uncertainty. Ah the joys of the off season. As I sit and watch the divisional playoffs, I wonder how long it will be for the Vikes to once again reach the final 8 teams. Well, it must be a pipe dream as they are so FAR away right now.
More thoughts from the edge with Odin soon.
Predictions for this weekend:
49'ers over Saints
Pats over Broncos
Packers over Giants
Ravens over Texans
